The Cantilever Bite Jumper (CBJ) appliance

Cantilever Bite Jumper, or CBJ, is a dental appliance that helps the jaw develop normally and achieve facial balance. Usually, this treatment device is necessary for bringing the lower jaw forward for better alignment.

How does the Cantilever Bite Jumper work?

The CBJ appliance consists of four crowns—one for every corner molar. There’s a stainless steel sleeve fitted to the two upper crowns, and often an expander for jaw widening, as well.

A rod slides into the sleeve coming from the upper crown and attaching to the two lower crowns. These sleeves and rods stabilise the lower jaw to improve a poor bite. Once the lower jaw grows into a new position, we can remove the appliance.

The CBJ appliance stays in the mouth for approximately 12 months.

Some may have an additional expander screw in the middle of the upper palate, which helps create space for crowded teeth. The patient's parent will need to turn the screw using a key-shaped tool once or twice a day.

What to expect when using a CBJ appliance

In the first few days after having an orthodontic appliance, it’s normal for the child to have difficulty speaking clearly. At this point, the appliance can also stimulate excess saliva production, but these symptoms wear off quickly.

There aren’t a lot of restrictions when it comes to diet during treatment, but try to avoid hard or sticky foods, as they can damage the appliance.

Lastly, the teeth and jaws may feel sore during the first three to five days after the CBJ placement. When this happens, give your child a nonprescription pain reliever.

How often does the CBJ appliance need to be adjusted?

Adjustment for the appliance is every 10-12 weeks. But don’t forget to take your child regularly for dental exams and cleanings every six months and keep those teeth healthy and clean!
